I came across this show on TV tonight – the premise is putting together a flash mob to pass along a message. (kind of along the lines of a singing telegram only on a much larger scale). It’s hosted by Howie Mandel, so you get the drift.
Enter this sweet young man who has fallen in love with a girl he’s never met face to face. They’ve been messaging each other and talking on the phone long distance for five years and never met? Wow! He’s going to offer to move to LA to be with her, if she wants him. She has no idea what is going to happen. In fact, she’s being led to believe she is part of a “dating show”. She interviews with the producer, and we see she doesn’t even mention poor Steve. Ouch!! So – he’s in love with her, and she just sees him as a penpal?
This guy is getting ready to lay it all on the line. He has all his belongings with him, and is going to tell her if she says yes, he stays, if she says no, he goes back home. He’s ready to give up a lot for her… what will she do?
..I’m writing this as I watch… and I’m thinking he’s been carrying on this friendship for five years because he would rather have that than the rejection of her saying no… poor guy. I kind of know how he feels. Status quo doesn’t always make us ecstatically happy – but is stepping out of our comfort zone and laying it all out like that really worth it? Is the possibility of having it all worth the risk of losing what we do have?
The flash mob is cool! The dancers were all doing their thing. Everything went still – silent – and then a voice says “it is said that time stands still when you meet your one true love”. …and she recognizes his voice. From this point forward it gets kind of corny – and the girl is doing a lot of giggling… Then he asks for her answer… everyone leans in… and typical to television, we go to a commercial break!
And she said yes! (Tell me ladies – would you have been too embarrassed to say no?)
So – for this one young man, taking a chance (on national television) was worth the response.
How often is THAT going to happen?
