Summer is Fading Fast - Live Music is Not

Fall really is just around the corner – the first day of fall is Sunday, believe it or not. But the summer festival season is holding on with everything it has. Check out the schedule at the end of this week’s blog to see what a busy weekend it will be.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to my Vineyard Photo Show with Alan Campbell. We had a great time and it was very cool to see so many new faces at Creekside Vineyard.  People showed up that I haven’t seen in years, and some people traveled great distances to visit. There were even a few unexpected visitors! A special thanks to Jen Mital for having us out! I’m looking forward to next year’s art events.

Due to the work involved in ramping up for the show, and more work for yet another show this Saturday at Codfish Hollow, as well as a new project and a quick trip to Chicago Saturday night after the show, I didn’t make my usual rounds of music venues this weekend. But… there was still music.

We were very fortunate to have Jordan Danielson scheduled at Creekside Vineyard at the same time as our show.  This was even more fortunate for me, as I‘ve been hoping to catch his show for a while now, but haven’t had the opportunity. Saturday I was able to spend an entire afternoon listening to Jordan. Danielson plays acoustic covers mixed in with his originals. And I hear he’s working on recording as well.

As soon as the show was over and the photos packed up and hauled back home Saturday afternoon, I headed for Chicago.  Kent Burnside and the New Generation were playing at Buddy Guy’s Legends, and since I have never been there, I decided I wanted to make the trip and see them play this very special venue. It was a short set, so they jammed in as much music as they could. Along with some blues standards, I caught an R. L. Burnside song and some Rolling Stones.

We stuck around a bit and caught the beginning of the Ray Fuller Band’s set. The band was solid, definitely blues veterans... with a little rock left in them. I enjoyed my visit to Legends, and hope to get back there sometime when I have more time to enjoy the show!

This week:

Festival season isn’t over quite yet. Centennial Park, Schweibert Park, LeClaire Park and Lindsay Park will all be hopping this weekend.

Centennial Park – Celtic Festival – enjoy some authentic Celtic food, shop the shops, watch the games and listen to music on 2 stages all day.

Lindsay Park – Riverssance – Art and music! Saturday – The Barley House Band, David G. Smith, and Pieces of Candy entertain. Sunday – stop out to see Lojo Russo, Maureen Carter and Three and a half Men.

LeClaire Park – Brew Ha Ha! Beer, Comedy and music from Jim the Mule

Schwiebert Park – The Kiwanis Bags Tournament is also an all-day music fest! If you’re not playing bags, come out for the music! Included this year – Two Peace, Pat Willis, Phat Cats and Movers and Shakers.

And the regularly scheduled music:

Tonight – The Ellis Kell band and Whoozdads are at Schwiebert Park, RIBCO has Dan Tedesco, Drama Major is opening for Bobaflex at the Redstone Room, Meet the Press and the Dirties are at Martinis on the Rock and Two Peace is at Rookies.

Friday – Jim the Mule kicks off the weekend with Friday Live at 5 on the RME courtyard, Whoozdads are at Wide River Winery, and Detroit Larry Davison is playing PepperJacks. RIBCO has Half Naked, and Maurice John Vaughn is playing The Muddy Waters. Lynn Allen is playing Martinis on the Rock, The Rusty Nail has the Funktastic Five, and the Phat Cats are playing Brady Street Pub. Rustic Ridge had The Acoustic Project and Dallas Hendricks is playing Barrel House Moline.

Saturday – Chuck Murphy is sitting in for an injured Lee Blackmon at Creekside Vineyard, and then has his regular show at the Daiquiri Factory later.  WideTrack is at the Greenbriar, The Establishment has 309, and Crossroads are playing at Generations. North of 40 is at Mulligans, Purgatory’s has Cody Road and you will find the Chris and Wes show at The Muddy Waters. RIBCO has Rude Punch, Major Malfunktion is playing Headquarters, and The Karry Outz are on a Sandbar (ok, they’re playing at a place called the Sandbar). Nitrix is at Blondies Bar, The Old 57s are playing the Rusty Nail, and Project X can be found at Building 311. Bier Stube has Them Som’Bitches, FlashPoint is playing Martinis on the Rock, The River House has Funktastic Five, and Cosmic is playing Mound Street. Rascals has Three Years Hollow, Aterra Tale, and As Big as a Mouse.

I will be at Codfish Hollow Saturday afternoon, evening and overnight. I’m looking forward to displaying my photos in the gallery there. I’ve added 16 photos to my framed collection since last week. Most of the new photos were taken in the Hollow. Gallery hours are the same as show hours – and the gallery is only open to show attendees. But that’s ok – it’s going to be a great concert, with 5 bands scheduled to start at 7 PM and run through the night. Camping is available in the pasture. Bring your own coolers, chairs and blankets and hang out on the hillside outside the barn, wander the gallery or party in the barn.  Come out to see Frontier Ruckus, Ghost Wolves, Jonny Corndawg, The Rushmores and Chris Coleslaw. Rumor has it there may be surprise guests? One never knows who might turn up at the barn!

There is so much to do this weekend, and most of it involves live music. So get out there, support live music, and have a great time while you are at it!
